EDLD 5399 Capstone Superintendent Internship

Week Two Assignment, Part 2 Job Entry Plan

In Week Two, Part 2, we asked that you identify your career and leadership goals. One of the most important skills in preparing for a career move is developing a job entry plan(s). The job entry plan should describe what goals, objectives, activities, and resources needed for you to accomplish your first day duties. Please write a job entry plan describing the following for your

FIRST DAY, FIRST WEEK, FIRST MONTH, AND FIRST YEAR.

We are not asking for a comprehensive multi-page report. We are asking you to try to identify one or two goals that you hope to address your first day, first week, first month, and first year. Remember to include the following for each first:

Goal(s)

Objective(s)

Activities addressing goals and objectives

Resources needed to achieve goals and objectives

My first day on the job as superintendent will be a busy one.  It will be important to meet as many staff members as I possibly can on that first day.  I am not talking about just central office staff, but all staff.  I want to make visits to the campuses, to food service, maintenance and transportation.  I want to each lunch with some of the teachers, and get their insight.  I want to visit with the principals, and share with them my vision.  I want my staff to realize and understand that I am there to support them, and that we are a family trying to accomplish a common goal.  By the end of the day, I hope that my staff has a better understanding of where, and what, I want our district to be.

By the end of the first week as superintendent, I want to continue to build relationships with my staff.  Some of the most vital people in this equation will be the central office staff.  I will begin to strengthen my relationships with these individuals because I am going to have to rely on them for so much, and ask a lot from them.  I will provide them with lunch one day, and share with them what I expect from their position, and gather information from them as to what has been done well, and what needs to improve.  At the same time, I will also continue to build relationships at the campus level, and within the other departments.  Having a good relationship with my staff, will hopefully get us off on a good start.

Within the first month as superintendent, I will begin to focus on the day to day operations of the district.  The first week was used to meet people, and strengthen relationships, now it is time to put those relationships into motion.  I will schedule a meeting with all of my assistants, directors, and principals, and begin the task of making the district a great place to work, and learn.  I will also begin the daunting task of putting together and organizing my first board meeting.  It will be important to convince the board members that they made a great choice in me.  I will follow all policies as far as developing a board agenda, and making sure that everything is scheduled appropriately for the upcoming board meeting.  I will also begin to venture into the community to build relationships with some of our community members, and business leaders.  Having strong relationships within the community will be a key role for my success as superintendent.

I want to be able to look back on my first year and be impressed with our progression as a district.  I want our students to be successful in the classroom, and in their programs and extra-curricular activities.  I want our staff to be happy with their employment, and with their careers.  I want our community to be supportive of our schools, and what we are trying to instill in our children.  I want our budget to be solid, and hopefully have a fund balance that puts us in a good position to be successful financially.  I want other school to be envious of our success, and call on us to ask questions.  I want our brand/logo/mascot, to be as great as it can be.  When people think of us, they think of an impressive district.  I want our schools and our district to be safe place for people to work, and for students to learn.  How does this happen?  It can only happen with hard work and dedication from all.  This is not something that one person can accomplish.  It will take a joint effort from the entire district to make the district into something special.
